About OpenMyScan

Last updated: April 24, 2026

OpenMyScan is a free DICOM viewer that opens your MRI or CT scan in any modern browser. No upload, no install, no account. Your files stay on your device.

Why OpenMyScan exists

Hospitals hand patients CDs, USB sticks, and download links with their medical scans — and then leave them to figure out how to open the files. Every option is frustrating in its own way. The bundled viewer on the CD is usually a Windows-only .exe that doesn't run on modern laptops. Clinical tools like Horos and RadiAnt are powerful but designed for radiologists reading thirty studies a day, not for a person who just wants to see their own MRI. Online viewers ask you to upload sensitive medical images to their servers — which most patients, reasonably, don't want to do.

We built OpenMyScan because none of those options worked for us. The files stay on your device. Nothing uploads. There's no account to create. It opens in any modern browser.

How it's different

Three things make OpenMyScan different from most DICOM viewers you'll find online:

  • It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is installed, nothing is downloaded, nothing is uploaded. When you close the tab, your scan is gone from memory.
  • It's built for patients, not radiologists. The interface has the controls you actually need — scroll through slices, adjust brightness, jump between series — and hides the rest. No measurement tools, no hanging protocols, no clinical workstation clutter.
  • It's free for the core viewer, with an optional Pro tier for saving, sharing, and comparing scans. Everything still runs locally, whether you pay or not.

Who built it

OpenMyScan is built by a small independent team. We're not doctors. We're builders who noticed that every DICOM viewer online either costs money, uploads your scan to a cloud, or is designed for people who read scans professionally. We built what we wished existed when our own scans landed on a hospital CD.

What OpenMyScan is not

OpenMyScan is a viewer for images you already own. It is not a diagnostic tool. It is not FDA-cleared or CE-marked as a medical device. It does not, cannot, and is not intended to interpret your scan, flag findings, or replace a conversation with your doctor.

If you are looking at your scan alone at home and you are worried about what you see: that is a reason to talk to your doctor, not to trust what you think you see. We built this so you could look. We didn't build it so you could diagnose.
