# Convert DICOM to PNG — Save the View in Your Browser

Open a supported DICOM study in the viewer, then export the rendered view as PNG. No upload or install.

- Lossless encoding of the rendered view
- No upload, no install
- Viewer needs a 1200px-wide window

## Why PNG instead of JPG?

PNG compresses the rendered image without adding JPEG compression artifacts. The export captures the viewer canvas, after brightness, contrast, zoom and pan have been applied. Lossless PNG encoding does not preserve the original DICOM pixel values or full bit depth.

The image dimensions depend on the rendered canvas and your display, rather than a guarantee of the original scan dimensions. The exported PNG cannot recover tones or detail outside the captured view. Keep the original DICOM study for medical review and transfer.

## How DICOM-to-PNG export works

This page opens the full DICOM viewer. It requires a browser window at least 1200 pixels wide. Your scan is processed locally.

1. ### Drop your DICOM file or folder

Drop the complete study folder above, or choose it from your computer. Wait for the viewer and series list to appear. Nothing is uploaded.

2. ### Set the view and open Export

Select the series and slice, then adjust brightness, contrast and zoom. Open Export and choose PNG with the current slice, whole series or a consecutive range.

3. ### Download your PNG

Start the export. A single slice downloads as PNG; multiple slices are bundled in a ZIP. Check the downloaded images and any skipped-slice notice before sharing.

## PNG vs JPG vs PDF — which format should you choose?

PNG is useful when you want an image of the rendered view without JPEG compression artifacts. It is still a rendered copy, not the original DICOM data.

JPG uses lossy compression and can produce a smaller image file. Inspect the result for the purpose you intend.

PDF puts rendered slices into a document with generated headers and slice labels. It does not create a radiology report. OpenMyScan offers all three formats.

## Questions people actually ask

### How do I use the PNG converter?

Drop your complete DICOM folder above to open the viewer. Select a series, adjust the view, open Export and choose PNG plus the current slice, whole series or range. Processing stays on your device. The viewer needs at least 1200 pixels of browser width.

### What's the difference between PNG and JPG for a medical scan?

PNG losslessly encodes the rendered view; JPG adds lossy compression. Neither preserves the original DICOM pixel values, bit depth or complete metadata. Neither replaces the original study for clinical review. Ask the recipient which format they need.

### Will the PNG file contain patient data?

The PNG holds the picture only. The DICOM tags carrying your name, patient ID and date of birth are not copied into it. Two things to check anyway: some scanners burn patient details directly into the image (common on ultrasound), and those are part of the picture; and the file name can still identify the study. Open the PNG and look at it before you send it anywhere.

### Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Files never leave your device.

### Can I export a whole series at once?

Yes. In the viewer, choose Export, PNG and the whole series or a consecutive range. Multiple images download as a ZIP. Check any skipped-slice notice and review the output.

### What scan types are supported?

PNG export works with MRI, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound. It supports any study that opens in the standard DICOM viewer.
